Why Are Remote Workers Outperforming Remote Workplace Workers?

Office workers seem to have a harder time concentrating at work then do remote workplace workers.

Google’s Work Environment

Look at Google’s offices. Have you seen these crazy offices? Lounges, tree house type cubicles and hammocks.

It looks like a fun place to work but the question is, does that environment and money produce anything of substance for the workers?

I understand that companies are trying to woo talent and win over the best team members they can. It seems their goal is to create a team and stimulating environment, but is there a downside to this? Research shows that the pros don’t outweigh the cons and the problem is getting worse.

Some studies have found that the # of people who say they can’t concentrate at work has increased by 16 %. Workers like quiet places. Trying to find a quiet place in some of these companies is not as easy as you think. The # of workers who say they don’t have access to quiet places has increased by 13 percent.

Why Does it Matter?

Does it matter where the work is being done? In many companies, the fact that the work is completed on time is more important than where it was completed. PropertyZar is a 100% remote workplace. PropertyZar is a fast-growing property management software company with all team members working remote.

There are several studies and surveys that illustrate what a remote workplace does for productivity.
Need a list? Here are some reasons remote workers outperform office workers:

Productivity

First, Remote workers don’t have to deal with office distractions. They also have greater autonomy and more freedom to get their work done. Most workers prefer this. A nationwide survey shows that 65% of office workers said working remotely would increase their productivity. Yet, another 86 % said that they prefer to work alone because it allows them to be more productive.

Teamwork

Remote workers make up some of the best co-workers. As strange as it may sound, remote distances generally require more communication. Without relying on being located close to co-workers, remote workers need to touch base with each other more often. When they do, it is generally for a good reason, and not just to shoot the bull. This tends to lead to a stronger sense of camaraderie. Video chats are also very popular. 92 % of remote workers admit that video collaboration actually improves their work with their co-workers.

Showing Up for Work

Onsite workers are often calling in sick, leaving early to run some errands or to address a family need. On the other hand, remote workers are not tied to an office. So they can schedule their tasks easier. If they have a minor illness such as a cold, sinus issues, working remotely greatly decreases the possibility of spreading their sickness to other co-workers. Obviously, this reduces other occurrences of sick leave. If they need to run out for a brief task, they can handle it without missing a workday. This allows for more time for the remote workers to be present for their team.

Talent Pool

For PropertyZar, we have a much greater pool of talented workers to pull from. We are able to get the best person for the job, our company and ultimately for our customers.

Morale & Happiness

Also, remote workplace workers are generally happier because of all the benefits to them. Benefits such as:
  • No commute or traffic
  • More time to their day (average 45min commute one way = 1.5 hours more of personal time)
  • Flexible hours
These are just a few of the reasons I believe remote workers are more effective then those who work onsite.
